Mental toughness is absolutely essential for high-level performance, so let’s be abundantly clear about that right up front. But…

It is far from sufficient when you're on the razor's-edge of high-performance.

Being mentally tough is merely one's “ticket to entry”.

In other words, without it, true high-performance isn’t even possible; but being mentally tough certainly does not mean you will function anywhere near the true top-end of your capability.

Perpetually high-performing individuals who inspire us with their consistently outstanding results (and who have personal lives that are in order, not shambles) have moved way beyond “mental toughness”.

They have dynamic and effective systems in place to ensure they are consistently dialed-in.

They train their minds and emotions in highly intentional and sophisticated ways.

They don’t leave things to chance.

They may have at one point, but they got wrecked thinking their "toughness" would carry the day and finding out the hard way that it didn't. So they made some indispensable adjustments to ensure they never had to stagger through that cold, lonely, and despairing place of crushing defeat ever again.

People who rely on their mental toughness lose their edge sooner or later.

That’s why I believe it’s so important – if you’re committed to realizing your full potential, with no regrets at the end about “what could have been” – to have an elite-level mental performance system you’re operating from every day.

And living life knowing you have that in place also gives you incredible peace of mind.

So be mentally tough, yes, but never rely on that alone. Because what gets you into the arena is not what helps you secure the victory.
